Have you noticed that across the good old USA things are not getting better?

Each day as I look at the news headlines, I wonder what in the world is going on in the minds of people? Why do people treat one another the way they do?

Do you realize that every two minutes someone is sexually assaulted? Do the math. That works out to thirty every hour for a total of 720 sexual assaults each and every single day of the year.

We are talking about daughters, wives, and moms. People in your community. People we know.

How might that number decrease if more people knew how NOT to be a victim?

Here's some more stunning statistics for you to ponder.

There is one robbery every minute, for a total of 1,440 each day. One aggravated assault every thirty five seconds, one violent crime every twenty seconds, a burglary every ten seconds, and some sort of property crime every three seconds.

No wonder folks by the droves are taking action and learning more about personal safety awareness, effective methods of self defense, home security, etc.

Although I have some training in self defense tactics along with some decent street fighting skills, the increasing crime rate in my city prompted me to begin carrying a personal protection device. I also purchased pepper spray for and a stun gun for my wife and daughter.

Please understand, I am not afraid of a little scuffle, but I want to have the upper hand when it comes to protecting my family.

I also want to be able to effectively intervene and stop victimization if I happen to come across it.

If a thug decided to assault me, I would hope someone would come to my aid. Therefore I should be willing and ready to come to the aid of others. Isn't that the way it works?

We should each be mindful of our own safety and the safety of those we love.

You need to stack the deck a bit more in your favor by at least carrying some super hot pepper spray or a good quality high voltage stun gun. Better yet, carry both. You never know when some sadly misguided person is going to want to make you or a loved one a statistic.

You remember the old KISS rule?

KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID

KISS applies perfectly to the use of a stun gun.

As long as good batteries are installed, it is simply a matter of flipping the power switch on and pressing a button. Amazingly simple isn't it?

Yet, at this point you may be wondering, "How long do I have to hold the stun button down? Where on the attackers body am I supposed to try and touch with the stun gun? What happens to the person I use it on?"

Those are great questions.

First of all, I believe that most people who are looking for a victim will quickly back off when they realize you are holding a high voltage stun gun in hand. The last thing they want is someone who is going to fight back.

A quick tap of the stun gun trigger will send an intimidating arch of electrical current between the metal probes... along with a very menacing snapping and popping sound.

Seeing and hearing the electrical discharge is a great deterrent that will most likely cause the would be criminal to quickly go looking for an easier target.

If contact with the assailant must be made, the best places to apply the stun gun are the upper chest area near the shoulders, the lower rib cage, and the upper part of the hip. If you are not able to hit one of those areas, go for any body part you can get.

The first half second of contact will not only startle the person, but cause muscular contractions and a bit of pain.

As the stun gun is held against the attacker for one to two seconds, they will begin to experience muscle spasms and a confused mental state.

Within three to five seconds of making contact, it will cause loss of muscle control, loss of balance, increased mental confusion and disorientation. In other words, at that point the person will be in a daze and possibly on the floor.

Now you can safely move away, get to a safe location, and call 911.

One more important thing to realize is that even if the attacker grabs ahold of you, zapping them with a stun gun will NOT shock you.

Under no circumstances can you receive a charge back into your own body while you are stunning an attacker, even if they have their hands on you.

You will like this!

Recently, while talking to a group of folks about high voltage stun guns and the TASER C2, someone piped in and said, "I bet that thing could knock the poop out of you."

The moment they said that, I remembered a great story about a shakedown that took place a few years back in a Colorado jail.

If you've ever watched any of the reality shows about jail or prison life, you are probably familiar with the term "shakedown." A shakedown is when inmates are removed from their cell and officers check every nook and cranny for items that are not allowed such as drugs and weapons.

Officers at this particular facility suspected that a six foot two inch tall, two hundred and fifty pound defendant was hiding drugs. After a thorough check of his cell revealed nothing, they decided that a body cavity search was in order.

The defendant began to protest. Who wouldn't? I don't believe anyone relishes the thought of a body cavity search. Especially the officers!

Quickly his verbal protest became a violent outburst as the inmate lunged at an officer, grabbed him, began punching, and attempted to take him to the ground.

Another officer quickly deployed his TASER, instantly taking the defendant to the ground as his entire central nervous system short circuited. What could have become a deadly situation was quickly stopped without anyone being hurt.

But the story doesn't end there.

It turns out that after being TASED a body cavity search was no longer needed. The 52,000 volts of electricity coursing through the mans body had caused him to involuntarily empty the contents of his anal cavity into his shorts.

In other words, it literally knocked the poop out of him. Along with three ounces of pot, twenty pills, and traces of methamphetamine all wrapped up in cellophane.

There is a reason why so many law enforcement agencies use TASER products. They have been proven time and again to work great as a non-lethal form of self defense. As an added benefit, you could say that in some cases they even cure constipation. But please... don't try that at home!

All kidding aside, if you are looking for a great self defense tool, I recommend the TASER C2. It has the same takedown power as the police models, but it is smaller, easier to carry, and you can even get it with a laser sight.

Recently, someone asked me an interesting question.

Is there a conflict between the teachings of Jesus and self defense?

The short answer is NO.

But what about the long answer?

The teachings of Jesus are obviously very radical in nature. As God in the flesh, teaching and demonstrating "the way," Jesus proclaimed that as participants in God's kingdom we are to:

"Love our neighbors as ourselves."

"Do unto others as we would have done unto us."

"Turn the other cheek."

"Love our enemies, bless those who persecute us, do good to those who spitefully use us."

Some look at these statements and I believe wrongfully assume that Jesus is stating that self defense in any form is wrong.

True, Jesus is telling us that as His followers, the way we deal with our enemies is going to be radically different than the way the world deals with enemies. But that does not negate the idea of self defense (especially the use of non-lethal weapons such as pepper spray, stun guns, or a Taser C2).

When Jesus made the statements above, He was addressing people who were living under the oppressive rule of the Roman government.

He was basically giving them a prescription for dealing with Romans who were occupying Hebrew territory. He was not giving instructions about defending yourself from a street thug, protecting your family from violence, preserving innocent children from abuse, or intervening when a woman is being assaulted.

He didn't say, "If you are a woman being raped just go with it."

Nor did He say, "If someone comes at you with a knife let them cut you."

The command was not, "If you are struck on one side of the head with a baseball bat, turn the other side."

Jesus intent was not that anyone stand idly by watching an innocent person being victimized.

His desire is that we love others the way we love ourselves and that we do into others what we would want done to us. I believe that calls us to a high standard. A standard which requires us to intervene when a person is being harmed in any way. After all, wouldn't you want someone to come to your aid?

I've heard too many stories about a person being harmed while a crowd stood and watched... without doing anything. That should never be.

You must put yourself in the shoes of the victim and ask a simple question: "Would I want someone to help me if I was the victim."

What's the answer? Yes!!!!

That is why I believe it is imperative that every individual should learn a bit about self defense and carry what I like to call a PDA (Personal Defense Assistant), such as pepper spray, a high voltage stun gun, a Taser, or at the very least a personal alarm.

What would Jesus do? He would come to the aid of the victim.

How about you?
